Shelby American Collection Opens Shop at hobbyDB

Of all the amazing things to experience in Boulder, Colorado – the mountains, the food, hobbyDB’s headquarters – one of the very best is the Shelby American Collection. If you’ve never been to this museum, you’re only missing out on the most incredible collection of Cobra, Shelby Mustang, and Ford GT40 cars that changed the face of auto racing in the 1960s.

hobbyDB is proud to join forces with the museum to help document their collection and also to operate the only official online store to offer exclusive items for sale. “Teaming up with hobbyDB will bring the museum new exposure and help Shelby fans and collectors get their hands on museum apparel, books and our collection of Shelby American Collection produced posters,” said Steve Volk, President of the museum. The Shelby American Collection has produced apparel, an annual range of very collectible limited run posters with historic racing photos and books about the production cars you wish you could own, and bumper stickers in case you do have an appropriate car in your garage. Proceeds from the sales help maintain the museum.

The collection includes rare production cars, race cars, prototypes, and one of a kind car parts. If the cars themselves weren’t enough of an attraction, the array of memorabilia surrounding them is also mind blowing. Models of all kinds of Shelby cars, art, advertisements, trophies… you name it, it’s there. There are also exhibits highlighting other pioneers of 1960s racing and design including Carroll Shelby, of course, but also Enzo Ferrari and Henry Ford.

The Shelby American Collection operates as a not-for-profit organization and is open only on Saturdays.

Introducing the Chris Stangler Customs Archive on hobbyDB

Chris Stangler head shot

One of the most respected diecast customizers around, Chris Stangler is no stranger to the world of Hot Wheels. He transforms 1/64 Scale models into magnificent works of art, which is why we are so excited to announce the launch of the official Chris Stangler Customs Archive now at hobbyDB! Travel back in time and take a look at all of the past designs that made Chris one of the most popular Hot Wheels customizers in the industry.

His customizing history dates back to 1992. “I was really into full size cars and was inspired when I went to The World of Wheels in Minneapolis Minnesota,” he said. “There were vendors who had custom painted some 1/64 cars, so I bought a few as samples and I asked a few questions and headed home to research and started customizing a few Camaros for my collection.” Since that first IROC Camaro (he chopped the top off and repainted it), he has created over 8,000 customs.

Chris Stangler Kustom City Evo Snake Mongoose

It’s easy to find your favorites, whether it’s the Kustom City Evo, the Batmobile, or any of the other special designs that immediately caught your attention. Chis is equally excited about the opportunity. “I’m happy to be part of the HobbyDB site, as they are an up and coming database that really gives people a chance to come across my work if they haven’t had a chance to see my work elsewhere online,” he said.
Chris has also opened up his own storefront on hobbyDB and will be giving our community members exclusive access to never before seen items such as the Snake and Mongoose versions of the Drag Bus, Blown Delivery, and ‘55 Panel. In addition to mashups of classic liveries on unexpected castings, he takes inspiration from customers. “I have done many requests for people as wedding gifts, memorials, designs made to resemble a full size car,” he said. “The most difficult design that comes to mind was custom order ‘55 truck. The details and design he wanted was very complex and it took many attempts to draw it up the way he wanted it. In the end he was excited and happy with the outcome which made it worthwhile.”

hobbyDb has also official archives for other customizers including Liberty Promotions (added in early February) and many more of your favorite diecast legends. In the past, it was easy for a customizer’s work to get lost as time flew by. Now, we can finally document and preserve the great work these customizers have given to the world of diecast in the hobbyDB catalog.

hobbyDB provides collectors with the tools they’ve been waiting for by allowing members to research details on their items, manage their collection, and even do business with other collectors on the site. You can even open up your own store if you really want to clean out your collection!

As you may know, South Texas Diecast has long been the go-to source for all Hot Wheels knowledge. STDC has worked tirelessly for the last 4 months with hobbyDB to make sure that we know exactly what Hot Wheels fans are looking for in an archive. The partnership is excited to reveal many new features that South Texas Diecast did not have time or the resources to offer. And most importantly, we commit that the data that you’ve always relied on will remain free, forever.

As you also know there are a lot of Hot Wheels we had to archive, and although both parties (and several other Hot Wheels influencers) put in a LOT of effort – you may stumble across an item with information that we missed or a mistake that a collector has made on a catalog entry. The best part about hobbyDB is that the Hot Wheels archive is truly a community project.

We’re asking Hot Wheels collectors of all kinds to pitch in and contribute to the integrity of the archive. Chip in what you know and curate your favorite series or casting of Hot Wheels and ensure that everyone visiting your page receives best information available. To find out more about becoming a Curator, visit http://info.hobbydb.com/curators/.

We have worked hard on putting together this information and features for all collectors. If you see something that needs improvement or tweaking, please feel free to email Rob directly at rob@hobbydb.com or the rest of the hobbyDB team at contact@hobbyDB.com with your suggestions and comments. We can’t wait to hear what you think!
