Meet the most expensive Hot Wheels car in the collecting world. Meet the 1969 Pink Rear-Loading Volkswagen Beach Bomb. This considered the rarest Hot Wheels car ever, with only two models in existence.
The Pink VW van features a sunroof, as well as an open rear window with two surfboards sticking out. This car was one of only two prototypes with the surfboards loaded into the vehicle. Later models featured a side pod where the surfboard accessories could be stowed outside the vehicle. This rare prototype never made its way to production because it was deemed too narrow to fit and function properly with the Hot Wheel Super Charger.
The pristine quality of the model and the extreme rarity has driven up the price of this car that was never intended for public release. The current owner, Bruce Pascal purchased the car for $72,000. Though, the model was valued at $100,000 in April of 2015 when it was featured on the History Channel’s Pawn Stars. Pascal attempted to sell the prototype model but was unsuccessful when the pawn store’s owners offered only $70,000.
Although there is a clear price differential between $100,000 and $70,000, this toy car, fitting in the palm of your hand, is more expensive than purchasing a brand new, 2015 Porsche Cayman S.
Pascal was inducted into the Model Car Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2009 as a Diecast Historian.
