We’re handing over the keys to Larry Wood for our latest venture into the world of Digital Collectibles. The legendary Hot Wheels designer is sharing a never-before-seen collection exclusively via hobbyDB.
And you can claim yours beginning today.
We’re thrilled to announce “The Ones That Got Away,” an exclusive hobbyDB series of Larry Wood designs.
These detailed renderings give you an opportunity to own an exclusive series of digital art (at a great price!), while allowing us to preserve and celebrate a part of Hot Wheels history. Read more about hobbyDB Digital Collectibles here.
Larry Wood has established himself as one of the most iconic names in model car lore. Nicknamed Mr. Hot Wheels, Larry spent five decades as Chief Designer and consultant, innovating such classics as the ‘49 Merc, Ramblin’ Wrecker and Boyd Coddington collector set.
And now he’s offering some of his personal and unique designs exclusively to hobbyDB Members. Click the YouTube video below to watch Larry share some of the inspirations for the series with Hot Wheels super collector Bruce Pascal.
The Larry Wood Digital Art Collection features five never-before-seen designs. The first four designs have a run of just 2,500 each and cost $4.99 per image. If you collect all four during the first week that they are available, you’ll receive the fifth design, the Skullduggery, for free to complete the set (this might take up to 24 hours to appear in your Showcase).
Once you are the owner of a specific Digital Collectible, no one else will be able to add it to their collection. It is uniquely yours within your hobbyDB Collection and Showcase, unless you decide to either sell it, gift it (we call this transferring), or trade it (a two-way transfer). Not your thing, but still want to support hobbyDB? Or want to share the love with another Collector in your life? You can “gift” Digital Collectibles to other Members via our new Transferring feature. Learn how to gift or transfer here.
Now for the best part.
This is the car that changed Larry’s life and the world of Hot Wheels forever. California Dreaming is a version of the car Larry drove – at a high rate of speed – one frigid December day when he put Detroit in his rearview mirror in favor of the sunny West Coast.
In the toy version, Larry envisions the flames holding the car up when it does a wheelie.
Larry pays homage to former Hot Wheels designer and friend Bob Lovejoy with a look at a prototype that the pair worked on back in the day. Using Bob’s affinity for airplanes, the Winged Express was designed with foldable wings that would pop-out over a certain spot on the track or when it goes over a jump. Flying Hot Wheels? Who do we need to speak to about making this an actual model?
And who did know that Larry had worked at Pratt & Whitney?
Bottom’s up! The Beer O’Clock was destined to be a hit among adult collectors, alas, executives would have yelled last call on the design before it would have been made.
This model incorporates Larry’s love for streamlined cars that were popular in the 1930s.
Larry draws from his roots with this model that pays respect to his time spent in Ford’s Mustang studio in the mid-1960s – particularly working on Shaker Hoods. The 60’s Concept is a new sketch of an old drawing of Larry’s, now modified with bigger wheels, redline wheels and a few Hot Wheels-inspired upgrades.
The Skullduggery might not have made it to a diecast production line, but it did see action on the streets, thanks to the ingenuity of Larry, who crafted a real-life version of this beast in his own garage.
It was while driving it around his neighborhood and Hot Wheels Car Shows when Larry realized the three-wheel drift trike, outfitted with a 110 horsepower engine, would make a really cool diecast design.
Best part? The model would come with the skeleton!
Three days remain to join more than 1,200 fellow collectors (including Mr. Hot Wheels himself!) and industry icons in owning a part of hobbyDB via our latest round of crowdfunding. Investing in hobbyDB is easy and can be done for as little as $100. The best part? Unlike a donation, investing in hobbyDB means that you’ll do well if we do well. Act quickly! This round of crowdfunding draws to a close on April 22. Full details here!
Larry Wood paying homage to Ed Roth is the most beautiful thing.
Right? Pure perfection 🤩
What a great interview, it is awesome to see all of those cool cars that we didn’t see on hot wheels
