hobbyDB super user Javier Serrano, aka Fjaviserr opens a pack of trading cards in search of the latest trends when it comes to valuable exclusives. Read more of his wonderful guest posts here!
The card market has always offered some interesting news and is achieving new fame these days, finding record figures in the most recent sought-after in the hobby, such as the Lebron Triple Logoman from 2020-21 Panini Flawless Basketball and The One Ring from Magic: The Gathering – The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth (2023).
These one-of-a-kind cards were sold for over $2 million dollars, and considering when they were released, it would not be a shock to think that things are going faster than usual in the card market.
In addition, let’s not forget the most recent world records, with the holy grail of the sport cards, the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle (grade 9.5) and the largest sale for a TCG card, the 1998 Pokémon Illustrator (grade 10), which were purchased for the very significant figures of $12.6 and $5.275 million dollars, respectively.
Maybe those events could explain the craziness around Ravensburger’s Disney Lorcana nowadays.
Since the Trading Card Game was revealed at D23 Expo 2022, TCG fans and Disney collectors are gripped with anxiety and filled with tension to add the first limited-edition convention cards to their collections.
And the story goes on, as we could see a few weeks ago at Gen Con, where several hundred attendees were seen lined up for more than sixteen hours to get the very first Starter Decks and promotional items of the game at Ravensburger’s booth, becoming the hottest release at the event.
Since its launch the most wanted are the promotional cards, bearing in mind that almost anything can make prices soar, particularly if they are graded. I assume that the price market will be normalized as soon as the game was available in different markets.
Beyond the passion of collectors, we also must consider that there are too many people speculating about those cards right now, and sometimes these external interferences can produce an impact in the market.
Another important factor to think about is that the real success in the card market is directly connected to the children’s audience, and we do not know if they will be interested in it.
Although everything indicates that it could be a hit, it is soon to determinate what it will happen, and only time will tell if Lorcana will get the laurel crown in the world of Trading Card Games next to Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering.
