Art Toy of the Week – Sametan

I have been collecting designer toys since 2004 and this is my weekly column.  I also have other interests (I am for example the Curator of the Breyer Horses and Warne’s Observer’s Pocket Books and generally am known to add anything cute to my collection).

This week’s Art Toy of the Week is Sametan by amazing sofubi artist, CometDebris. First released back in 2011, every sale of Sametan, a shark-like figure wearing trousers with his fins sewn back on, helps to benefit PangeaSeed, a foundation supporting the welfare of our oceans. The Sametan figure, produced in lovely soft sofubi vinyl, stands about 4.5″ tall and has been released in a large number of colourways, and a whole bunch of customs too! CometDebris often releases event exclusive figures for events he attends around the world.

Original Sametan

You can sometimes find limited edition Sametans for sale on CometDebris’ website, or occasionally find them for sale on auction sites, but many are coveted and go into black hole collections, you’ll have to prize mine from my cold dead hands haha! I adore this little figure, if you’re a sofubi fan it’s a must for your collection.
