From Princess Diana to Kurt Cobain, the Most Valuable Collectible Sweaters

The world of collectible fashion saw a spike during the Fall of 2023.

Just in time for the autumnal sweater season.

On the Sotheby’s auction block that September was the fabled Princess Diana Sheep Jumper.

The iconic sweater, knitted by the British brand Warm & Wonderful, was donned publicly by the then Diana Spencer in 1981 to one of Prince Charles’ polo matches.

More than 40 years later, the garment sold for $1,143,000…the most ever paid for a collectible sweater.

In doing so, it surpassed the previous record, held by Kurt Cobain’s MTV “Unplugged” Cardigan. The button-up from the famous 1993 concert – held just months prior to the artist’s passing – fetched $334,000 during a 2019 auction.

In an ironic twist, it was Cobain’s pants also setting records in the autumn of 2023.

That November, Cobain’s Patched Denim Jeans, which made appearances in the band’s “Heart-Shaped Box” video, as well as numerous concerts and promos, sold for a record-setting $412,750.

Fashion collectibles can be big business. What’s an article of celebrity clothing that you’d love to add to your collection?

John Lennon’s New York City T-shirt? Original Nike’s from Michael Jordan? Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress?
