Welcome to the second of my look back at some of the big spenders in the model horse collecting world from the past month or so. Those with spare cash were not holding back and there have been some whoppers! It’s been very interesting seeing some very rare vintage figures, and brand spanking new limited edition and custom figures, go under the hammer.
Again with the woodgrain! Why not start the blog as we did last month with another high rolling woodgrain vintage figure from Breyer! This is the Fury Prancer which was released way back in 1959. Unlike the other Fury’s, this figure did not include the chain link rains, plastic saddle nor a rider, it came as is. It’s an exceptionally scarce figure, even more scarce as this piece still had his sticker on his belly, so when he appeared on eBay the hammer went down at $3,500!
Next up is a modern piece from Peter Stone. Known as an “extreme factory custom” (or EFCM), this is a one-off piece straight from the Stone factory that has had some major modifications. This was originally their Arabian Stallion which has been heavily modified into an American Saddlebred and named “Emphasis“. When he went to auction he sold for $6,720!
Beautiful Peter Stone Arabian Mare, Serina, is another EFCM figure. A combination of the Arabian Stallion and Arabian Mare moulds, she was very detailed. When she went to auction she achieved $7,000!
A “regular” factory custom rather than extreme as Bijou had a few less modifications, but still very much a one-off piece of the Peter Stone Arabian Stallion transformed into a unicorn! When this piece went to auction he achieved $8,183!
The last of the Peter Stone horses is EFCM Bendecida, a pregnant Azteca mare. An extremely detailed figure, right down to eyelashes and the little poking out tongue! When she went to auction she achieved $9,031!
Technically neither a pony or a horse, Figgy is the Peter Stone mule figure repainted as a OOAK (one of a kind) Zedonk (zebra donkey hybrid). When this gorgeous figure went up for sale it sold for $2,320!
This is a porcelain figurine of a horse and rider performing Dressage by the Spanish manufacturers, Lladro. They are very well known for their high end pieces, and this detailed figure from the early 2000’s recently went to auction, fetching $2,500!
The very aptly named “Quarantini” is a Breyer 1:9 figure on the Family Arabian Stallion mould. This was a very limited edition figure of just 20 pieces released in 2020. Originally made to be a table centre piece prize at the Seattle Soiree event, the event was cancelled during Covid lockdowns and the figures were raffled instead. One of these figures came up for auction at the Bonnie Ellis estate sale and the hammer went down at $3,300!
This is a “deco” silver dapple pattern on the Breyer 1:9 Proud Arabian Mare. Just 30 of these figures were produced for volunteers at Breyerfest in 1993. When one of these went up for auction at the Bonnie Ellis estate sale, the final hammer price was $3,250!
This handsome 1:9 scale Breyer figure named Chicory was a very limited release in 2014 at the Big Easy Bash event. Only 120 of them were produced, so when one popped up on eBay he sold for $1,200!
This handsome 1:9 Breyer named Ozark was a very limited edition release in 2024 at the Spokes & Spurs event. Only 52 of these figures were released and sold exclusively at the event. One popped up on eBay in January and sold for $2,200!
A handsome Quarter Horse in porcelain, vintage Metalchex by Hagen Renaker is a hard one to find these days, so when one popped up on eBay he went for $1,100!
Zara is a gorgeous larger scale Hagen Renaker porcelain vintage Arabian piece. This is the palomino San Marcos colourway and in a glossy finish, when she went up for auction on eBay she also sold for $1,100!
This is an enormous porcelain figure named Rampant Horse produced way back in the 1930s by German company Rosenthal standing 15″ tall. So when one in beautiful condition for its age went up for auction on eBay he went for $1,800!
