Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots: The Story of a Toy Legend

In 2021 Mattel Films announced a project to develop the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots Live-Action Motion Picture with Universal Pictures and Vin Diesel’s One Race Films.

Since then, we haven’t heard any news about it, but we can imagine how it would be after watching the cameo of these beloved boxing robots in “Red One” (2024). It’s Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots like you’ve never seen before!!!!

The origins of this classic tabletop game originally emerged at Marvin Glass and Associates (MGA) in the early 1960’s.

The toy design company from Chicago was the brainchild of one of the most successful toys and games from that decade including The Great Garloo, Mr. Machine, Lite Brite, Mouse Trap, Operation, and Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots among others.

The boxing project almost didn’t take place because of the death of boxer Davey Moore in the ring in 1963, which generated a broader debate within public opinion, and the toy laboratory considered that situation a risk for the success of the game.

However, the solution was simple, and they transformed the fighters into robots which fall apart, rather than boxers who fall over.

Marx 1964-1980

Marx acquired the rights of the game and distributed the first units in 1964, becoming a hit in the United States.

That first edition is highly desired among collectors, because it came assembled in a large box with a cyan colored crowd insert. That design changed in 1966.

We can find several box variants from Marx, highlighting the UK version from the 1970’s, where it was distributed under the name Raving Bonkers.

Besides, they changed the name of the robot champions as well, renamed to Basher Bonker and Biffer Bonker, instead of Blue Bomber and Red Rocker respectively.

After the success of Star Wars in 1977, Marx released an epic version called Clash of the Cosmic Robots, starring PROG-2 and V-STYX, a refreshing new design version more suitable for the new intergalactic madness of those days.

Ideal 1987-1989

Marx went bankrupt in 1980 and its assets including the trademarks, and most toy molds were purchased by Jay Horowitz of American Plastic Equipment, who later transferred all rights to American Plastic Equipment’s subsidiary, American Classic Toys.

After several years of being missing in the market, View-Master Ideal launched a new version of the classic game in 1987. They mixed some of the cosmetic changes from Clash of the Cosmic Robots without forgetting the aesthetic of the original concept.

Maybe the most significant of all of the changes in that version was renaming the robots to Bolt Crusher Bob and Gear Grinder Greg.

Tyco 1989-1996

In 1989, Tyco Toys bought View-Master Ideal, and under its management two new versions of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots landed on the market, one in 1990, and the other in 1994.

Mattel 2000 – Present

A few years later, in 1996, Mattel announced it would acquire Tyco, and the deal was closed in 1997.
Mattel has been the home of Blue Bomber and Red Rocker since that day, launching its first remake of the classic version in 2001.

After that, the awesome tabletop game has become a relevant item on Mattel’s catalog, finding many variations of it, including Pixar’s Toy Story, DC characters or anniversary versions.

Without doubt, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots is one of the most recognizable toys of all time, and it represents a staple for several generations, being a true icon of pop culture.

Its influence has trespassed the frontiers of time, becoming a global phenomenon which also includes a long list of memorabilia articles, finding among them, action figures, mugs, vinyl toys, keychains, video games and beyond.

After all, the game designed by Marvin Glass will still be found in stores today, preserving the legacy of one who once was known as the reigning king of toy designers.
