McDonald’s could not handle the newest Meal toy frenzy

In April we reported about the new McDonald’s Minecraft Happy Meals launched in tandem with the Minecraft movie. While many a fan loved the new collectibles in America, McDonald’s Happy Sets in Japan have truly taken the world by storm. The obsession with these Happy Sets featuring Chiikawa toys and Minecraft has forced Japan to cancel the planned third launch of these popular collectibles.

Instead of the cute Chiikawa toys, Happy meals will now include illustrated books, picture books, or other previously released toys.

These product changes came from the backlash of many outlets selling out of the original CHIIKAWA meal which featured CHIIKAWA and Minecraft toys within just two days. In an announcement on McDonald’s Japan’s official website, they asked customers to only purchase a maximum of four Happy Meal sets, including both ‘Minecraft: The Movie’ and ‘Chiikawa’ types. They went on to say “Please refrain from purchasing for resale or other commercial purposes.”

Unfortunately many customers didn’t stick to this rule and ended up discarding the food entirely, only keeping the toys for their own fandom or potential resale. This behavior often disrupted customers who were trying to make their own food orders and led to wait times of longer than 30 minutes.

Scalpers have already benefited as while a Chiikawa meal usually cost less than $4, complete sets of “Chiikawa” toys are being sold on second-hand marketplaces for around $100 or more.

So with all the frenzy we have to ask, what have you queued for in the past?
