For many years now, the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, TN USA, has conducted a rally across middle Tennessee. It is a one-day out and back affair, with a nice rally book included. It is not a competition or timed event, but you do have to get to lunch in time and then back to the museum that night for dinner!
The route covered 75 miles of backroads to a catered lunch at a picnic shelter on the Cumberland River. Returning back to the museum covered 73 miles because a different route was chosen by the leaders. To get a car for the rally, you must login to a website at the exact moment the cars are released – first come, first serve, and pay a large ‘fee’ (a donation to the museum).
For the 2025 rally, I finally clicked on the 1967 MGB GT in time to get it! I tried for the last three years and never got it… I had a red Corgi Toys of this car so I always loved the look of it. Now was my chance to see how it drove!
Twenty-five museum cars are prepped by the museum mechanics and are thus ready to go. Support is provided by museum staff, volunteers, and mechanics, in case of breakdowns or getting lost. So the rally is a very well run event, so much so that this was my tenth time doing it! Here is my tenth anniversary gift plus some Tatra beer and wine in a museum case.
Because of the unmarked roads and many turns, a co-pilot is almost essential; my friend Skip has done it with me for most of those ten years. We alternate who drives and who navigates.
After lunch in the park, we were offered rides in their 1964 Amphicar by the museum owner. A nice relaxing loop on the Cumberland.
Then we took off one by one for the ride back to the museum where we had a tour of the ‘vault’, the basement storage area.
There was plenty of time to look around the main floor of the museum as well before our dinner.
Several display cases of model cars are scattered around. Some are in the gift shop and are for sale.
